“The Man on the Bench”

Darl started his morning like any other—coffee in hand, Bible verse of the day still fresh in his mind: “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2). He smiled at the thought, not knowing how the day would unfold.

On his way to work, he noticed an older man sitting alone on a bench near the grocery store. The man looked tired, his coat thin against the cool morning air. Something in Darl’s heart tugged—almost like the gentle whisper Elijah heard in the cave, the “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12).

He walked over and asked, “Sir, are you alright?”

The man looked up with kind eyes. “Just waiting,” he said softly.

Darl offered him a warm breakfast sandwich and a bottle of water. The man accepted with a grateful smile. As they talked, the man spoke words that felt strangely familiar—words about peace, forgiveness, and how God sees every act of kindness done in love. It reminded Darl of Jesus’ words: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me.” (Matthew 25:40).

After a few minutes, Darl stepped away to take a phone call. When he turned back, the bench was empty. The man was gone—no sign of him on the sidewalk, no door opening or closing nearby. Just… gone.

A quiet awe settled over him.

He remembered the disciples on the road to Emmaus who walked with Jesus but didn’t recognize Him until He vanished from their sight (Luke 24:13–31). Their hearts burned within them as He spoke. Darl felt that same warmth now.

Driving away, he whispered, “Lord… was that You?”

He didn’t know for sure. But he did know this: Every act of compassion is seen by God. Every moment of kindness reflects Christ. And sometimes—just sometimes—we may be closer to Him than we realize.

So, knowing these things, what are you going to do about it?
