Today, my heart is still burning from what happened on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). Cleopas and I were walking, weighed down by sorrow after the events in Jerusalem. We spoke of Jesus of Nazareth—how we had hoped He was the one to redeem Israel. Our grief was heavy, and our understanding clouded.

As we walked, a stranger joined us. He asked what we were discussing, and we poured out our confusion and disappointment. To our surprise, He gently rebuked our slowness to believe and began to explain the Scriptures, starting with Moses and all the Prophets. His words opened our minds, and the ancient promises suddenly made sense. Yet, we did not recognize Him.
When we reached Emmaus, we urged Him to stay with us, for evening was near. At the table, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to us. In that moment, our eyes were opened—we knew Him! It was Jesus! Then He vanished from our sight.
We said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32). We hurried back to Jerusalem to tell the others: “The Lord has risen indeed!” (Luke 24:34).
Now, as I think back, I am filled with awe and reverence. The One who walked beside us was the risen Christ. He is alive, and He revealed Himself in the breaking of bread. My heart overflows with gratitude and worship for Jesus, who meets us in our doubts and reveals Himself in the most unexpected ways.
You may never know when you are in the company of angels, or even Jesus himself.
What are you going to do about it?
