If you walked into a room and the person you came to see was so obsessed with ______ that they never even looked at you. They were positioning it, adjusting it, or just
trying it out. Put what you want in the blank. If this happened which is more important, the _______ or you. You can turn it around. Could you be so obsessed with something that everything else just fades into the background. Candidates for the blank are the TV, a movie, a ballgame, a cell phone, a run, a car, or even just plain old shoes. It is important to have essentials but what should be important.
Luke 18:18-24
18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
It appears obvious that this man was more worried about something else other than God. He has a problem with the first two of the Ten Commandments
Exodus 20:1-5
1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Our tombstones or conversations in heaven probably won’t contain much about the ______’s in life. IE: He watched a good football game, played a wonderful game of solitaire, or drove a nice car. More likely it will be, who you took to a football game or church in your car.
Our priorities should be to love God and our neighbor. (Matthew 22:34-40)
The holidays are coming. Thanksgiving is for giving thanks to God. Christmas celebrates the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. Is that what we are doing or are we obsessed with something else?
