Becoming One: Why Marriage Still Matters

In the beginning, God looked upon Adam and said, “It is not good that the man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18). So, He created Eve—not as a temporary companion, but as a partner in covenant. And in that sacred moment, God established the pattern: “A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). This wasn’t a casual arrangement. It was a divine blueprint for intimacy, unity, and legacy.

Fast forward to Ephesians 5, where Paul echoes this truth and reveals its deeper meaning: “This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church” (Ephesians 5:32). Marriage, then, is not just a social contract—it’s a living picture of Christ’s faithful, sacrificial love for His people.  A man should love his wife as Christ loved the church. (Ephesians 5:22-24) Although it is not culturally acceptable anymore, women should submit unto their husbands as unto the Lord (Ephesians 5:22-24).

The various cheap imitations of marriage today, are much less than God intended and take something away from the sacred nature of true marriage as outlined by God. Marriage is where love is sealed, not just felt. It’s where two lives are not merely shared but joined under God’s blessing.

Ephesians 5 calls husbands to love their wives “as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (v.25), and wives to honor and trust their husbands as the church does Christ. This kind of love is not self-serving, it’s sacrificial, sanctifying, and secure. It thrives not in convenience, but in covenant. It is meant to be permanent (Romans 7:2)

From Genesis on, Scripture paints a consistent picture: God’s design for love is not temporary or tentative—it’s committed, consecrated, and covenantal. Marriage is more than a milestone; it’s a ministry. And when we honor it, we reflect the very heart of God.

Perhaps, God’s way is better.  Instead of doing what we want, we should do what God says.

So, what are you going to do about it?
